Why we thought about moving to ‘The Valley’
First, and so you understand, if you decide to move and live here, you’ll find that the area is called the ‘Vail Valley’. It includes Vail, Avon, Eagle-Vail, Arrowhead, Edwards and Eagle (and other areas in between). Many locals that work in the area primarily live in Eagle-Vail, Avon, Edwards and Eagle.
In 2003, we were living in Atlanta GA and the drive to work was taking us, sometimes, 2 hours in our car – one way. We had to rise around 5:30 to ensure we were on the road and ahead of the bulk of those commuting to work.
The drive was often made more horrible by someone having an accident or simply slowing down to look at something on the side of the road.
We vacationed in Vail twice for skiing and really liked the mountains – the scenery is breathtaking. We also got married in Vail – in November. Since it was a non-busy time, we drove around the area and explored. This was how we figured out that a good place for someone to live was in Eagle-Vail (between Vail and Avon).
How we made the decision
It wasn’t easy and was some degree of luck – seeing an opportunity in the middle of chaos. Since Georgia living was not working for us, we looked at the local real estate market in Vail, Avon and Eagle. Homes were (and still are) very expensive – especially to us – coming from Georgia. It was shocking and was not easy to take into our minds. That is an adjustment you will have to make if you decide to live here.
The chaos I refer to was personal events happening that got us in a position where we were ready to leave Georgia. Timing gave us a chance to decide about moving. Our family did not believe us when we said we were moving. They didn’t realize we meant it until we didn’t answer the door at our old house in Georgia. Change is not something everyone accepts.
How we got started here
Rather than buy a home in the Valley, we decided to rent whatever we could and see how things went. It was a very smart idea for us since it helped us to understand the Valley (where things are, where we like to go, things we like to do and traffic patterns). Before we started renting, we stayed at The Landmark in Vail for a few weeks – until we could find a place to live.
It was 2004 and the real estate market was absolutely crazy (the housing craze was heating up and houses were selling in the same day they were listed). Rent for a home was (and still is) high. We were confused and didn’t know what to do. So we stayed in the rental home (a townhouse) and kept exploring to confirm where we wanted to live. For us, we confirmed that it was Eagle-Vail.
Even though the price of homes was obnoxious to us, we were hooked on living in such a place. And I had not even tried the fishing yet. Nor had we really experienced the other seasons.
We got very lucky and were courageous – and put down 20% on a home. We are in the same home and our current opinion is we will keep it ‘forever’
Living in the mountains is good for some, but not for all. Taking the step of leaving a large city and a steady, well-paying job is a big one. Is it for you? We are happy to talk with you and see if and how we can help.
Be well and live courageously.
